vdB Finger Control Surface 8 Soft

The vdB Finger Control Surface 8 Soft (VDB-FCS8-SOF) is a USB control surface for Sound Devices 8-Series recorders. Each of its eight channels has a dedicated trim control, fader and PFL control, providing a separate panel for recording and mixing. This version has Soft faders with less movement resistance than the Firm version.

Channels, monitoring and recording

The trim controls set input gain, while the linear faders adjust channel levels. PFL lets you monitor an individual channel. The ARM button works with the PFL controls to arm or disarm tracks for recording. LEDs indicate PFL and track-arm status.

REC and STOP operate the recorder's transport. MIC activates the recorder's slate microphone, keeping these functions directly accessible on the panel.

Assignable controls

The Master rotary control can be assigned to a bus or output. Buttons A, B, C and D and the Master control's push function are also assignable. The recorder's mapping menu provides functions such as monitoring, output control and take marking. Mappings are stored in the recorder.

Channel banks

Assignable buttons let you switch to another channel bank. The faders and trims are not motorised, so their physical positions do not automatically follow the new channel values. vdB therefore warns of possible level jumps when switching banks during recording.

Soft faders and construction

Firm and Soft versions differ in resistance to fader movement. Soft provides a lighter, smoother fader movement. The housing combines PA12 nylon with aluminium panels. Faders are user-replaceable, and two 1/4"-20 mounting points provide attachment options.

Compatibility and power

Compatible with Sound Devices 833, 888 and Scorpio. The controller receives power through its USB connection to the recorder. Sound Devices MixPre recorders are not supported.
