The Schoeps MK 5 is a condenser microphone capsule from the modular Colette series, mechanically switchable between omnidirectional and cardioid. A sliding switch on the side selects the polar pattern without changing the capsule.

The MK 5 uses a single diaphragm. In omni mode, it operates as a true pressure transducer without proximity effect. In cardioid mode, it operates as a pressure-gradient transducer, providing directional pickup and attenuation of sound from the rear. This allows the same capsule to accommodate different instruments, recording distances and acoustic conditions.

Using the pattern switch

Set the switch fully to either omni or cardioid. Intermediate positions are not intended as additional polar patterns and produce undefined results.
